A Tribute to Chris Brunswick

We are saddened that Chris Brunswick, vice president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and a member of its Board of Directors, passed away on February 25 after a long, courageous battle with breast and cervical cancer. She was 60 years old.

A longtime breast cancer advocate, Chris was part of the National Breast Cancer Coalition since its inception in 1991. She was a leader at every level, and among her many other volunteer efforts for NBCC, she testified before Congress and regulatory agencies, often appeared on television and in print media on behalf of NBCC, represented the coalition on various national committees and panels, and spoke around the world to advocates and researchers. She served on the NBCC Executive Committee and was one of the founders and advocates for NBCC’s international work, participating in various international conferences, including the 4th United Nation’s World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995. Chris acted as a mentor for new NBCC board members and for participants in our Emerging Leaders network.

Chris was smart; she had grace, strength, a keen sense of humor and incredible “street sense.” She was a treasured friend to many. She knew how to get things done. And how to have fun.

Born in Iron River, Michigan, Chris was a graduate of Michigan State University where she earned a degree in economics.

She is survived by her son Daniel Kemp of New York City.

Her family has asked that donations be made to The Chris Brunswick Fund at National Breast Cancer Coalition, 1101 17th Street, NW, Suite 1300, Washington, DC, 20036.

The Vance Wall Foundation has generously pledged to match all donations to The Chris Brunswick Fund.

Christine's energy, intelligence, determination and smile informed and inspired my own breast cancer advocacy. We will all miss her deeply. Words cannot express this loss.

In loving memory of Christine Brunswick, whose shared musical and culinary adventures from Princeton to Paris brought great joy, and whose generosity of spirit is an inspiration.

I met Chris in 2008 at the ERA of HOPE conference in Baltimore. She shared her recent diagnosis of bone metastasis with the audience. As an advocate living with bone mets since 2001, still in treatment but no progression, I felt I needed to speak to her, but was a bit hesitant.
During a break I did approach her; shared my story and she said she was so glad to hear a story that offered hope. I even got a hug.
I am so sorry she's lost her battle. She was an outstanding leader and lovely woman.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of the amazing and dynamic Chris Brunswick yesterday. I cut my advocacy teeth in Washington DC in 2001 at the NBCC Advocacy Training Conference. Chris was there and I believe she was there every year after, as I was. When Chris spoke, everyone in the room quieted. Okay, sometimes they hooted and hollered. Chris called forth every emotion required for advocacy work. Gone too soon... never to be forgotten by advocates all around the world. And right here on Lake Road, Webster, NY, on the north coast of the United States, I am wondering if we will EVER see the end of this disease... but we have no choice. We've got to keep trying.

I already miss you terribly, my dear friend. The memories we made in Brussels and Paris and DC and RI will be forever in my heart. God bless you Chris and may you rest in peace.
My life was blessed because you were a part of it.
